Dear Parents and Guardians, As many of you already know, Governor Perry recently signed Senate Bill 530 implementing required physical fitness evaluations for public school students in 3rd through 12th grades. Historically, Elkins students have participated in physical fitness evaluations while enrolled in their health and physical education classes. This legislative action requires that all students participate in these physical fitness evaluations even if they are not enrolled in a health or physical education class. The state has mandated the use of the Cooper Institute Fitnessgram as the state’s tool for evaluation. The areas of testing will be: aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. Students will engage in a one-mile walk/run, push-ups, sit-ups, trunk life, and shoulder stretch. At Elkins, all 9th graders will test on April 29th and all other students will be pulled from their English classes may 2nd and 3rd to participate in the physical fitness evaluation process. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes in order to better perform the evaluation tasks. The results of the physical fitness evaluations will not impede grade point average, grade placement, graduation, or campus ratings. The evaluation of health criteria will be used to encourage progress towards reaching an optimum health fitness zone. You can find answers to frequently asked questions by referring to the following website: www.fitnessgram.net. If your child is medically exempt from any of the testing components, you must have the attached form filled out and signed by your physician. Theses forms must be returned to the school nurse by April 29th, where they will be kept on file. Please join us in our efforts to impact the development of positive fitness and nutrition habits that will insure the health, well-being, and success of your child. Sincerely, Barbara Whitaker Elkins High School Principal
Elkins Students & Teachers: Vote for "Teacher-of-the-Day" Tuesday, April 26 - Thursday, May 54/25/2011
Teacher Appreciation Week is just around the corner! Your VIPS Team would love to honor those special teachers that have gone above and beyond this year by crowning a "Teacher-of-the-Day" from Tuesday, May 3-Friday, May 6!! These teachers will be celebrated by having their classroom door decorated, an honorable mention on the daily announcements, a balloon bouquet provided by HEB, and a gift basket provided by VIPS!!
Students will be voting throughout the week for their choice, but we are also asking each one of Elkins' staff members to cast your vote too! You have the unique opportunity of knowing the extremely behind-the-scenes-hard work of your colleagues, which usually goes unnoticed by the students. Please help us by casting your vote for Elkins "Teacher-of-the-day"! You can cast your vote anonymously by putting it in a sealed envelope and placing it in the VIPS box or dropping it in the ballot box in the cafeteria during all lunches throughout this week (April 25-29). Please help us make this a wonderful gesture of our sincere appreciation to such GREAT teachers!! Congressman Olson would like to invite all High School age students for the upcoming school year to apply for the 2011 – 2012 Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC). The CYAC will meet four times during the year for a roundtable discussion on current events as well as hear from elected officials and policy experts on the law making process. These high-achieving students will be considered the Congressman's young ambassadors and will be asked to give their opinions on major issues in Congress. To be considered, the completed application (attached) must be submitted to Congressman Olson's Sugar Land office no later than Friday, May 20th. A board will review the applications and determine which students will be selected for this year’s CYAC. If you have any questions, please contact Katie Vackar at 281-494-2690 or [email protected]. Congressman Olson is looking forward to working with this upcoming CYAC class.

The graduates represented 22 FBISD campuses, and included three associate principals and 20 assistant principals, who are aspiring to become campus principals. The LEAD (Leadership, Excellence, Accountability and Development) Principals’ Academy prepares eligible candidates for successful future FBISD leadership positions by having them complete eight challenging, monthly sessions that are relevant to enhancing leadership skills necessary to be an effective leader. Academy participants take part in sessions dealing with topics such as effective communication, realities of school finance, instructional leadership, and human resources. They are also required to complete a ROPES course to help promote team building, as well as StrengthFinders sessions to help identify their leadership strengths and discover their emotional intelligence for personal growth and development. The 2011 Graduates of the LEAD Principals’ Academy are:
This year’s cohort was under the leadership of Dr. Carlson. He also congratulated the graduates and said, “I look forward to seeing you all blossom in your future leadership roles with the District.” It's tough landing a job in today's tough economy, especially for teens who might be competing with adults for the same position. That is why Missouri City Library will be hosting a job search/resume writing workshop designed specifically for teens, 16 to 19 years of age, to help them gain a competitive edge and land a job. Teens will learn the components of a resume and receive advice on how to make their resume stand out.

Elkins Gay Straight Alliance will be participating in National Day of Silence. This is a national youth movement designed to bring attention to the epidemic of bullying across the world whether it is directed to gay or straight individuals.
The participants will try to not talk all day to protest bullying in general and specifically anti-gay bullying, name calling and harassment. They will carry a card explaining their silence and will wear something red, purple, or tie-dyed. Please respect their commitment to this cause and not require them to speak to help these dedicated students build awareness and make a commitment to address these injustices. However, they know that if a teacher or an authority figure demands they speak because of a class assignment or directly asks them a question, they must respectfully answer. |
