Elkins to Offer Two FCS Career Pathways for the 2014-2015 School Year
Elkins High School is proud to offer two FCS pathways beginning next year. The goal of the CTE department is to empower students today for tomorrow’s jobs. According to Elisa McIntire, FCS lead teacher at Elkins, “One way to ensure that these students are better prepared is to offer career pathways. Certifications in job related areas is also stressed. Entering freshmen next year will be the first group of students will be given the opportunity to choose classes that reflect their future goals.”
The first pathway being offered is Education and Training. After taking a specific set of courses, students will learn about the methodology of teaching and actually shadow professionals in the field. Their senior year, they will be assigned to a FBISD campus for hands-on experience. Statistics show by the year 2020, there will be a need for teachers. Next year juniors who have had taken child development or psychology, may apply for the program.
The second pathway is Fashion Design. Once again, after taking a specific set of courses, students will learn about the history of the fashion industry, understand the use of textiles, and create croquis, develop patterns and eventually produce the garments. Next year sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a background in art may apply for the program.
This is an exciting time to be in CTE. If you are interested in learning more about the program offerings, please see Mrs. McIntire in Room 528.
