Today’s philanthropists are getting younger and younger. As early as their teenage years, many students are discovering their passions and concerns about community and/or global issues, and increasingly using social networking sites to raise awareness and funds for charities. Our community’s students are a powerful asset and a force for social change within our county. So, what is YIP and how is a YIP Team formed? The YIP Team is formed by bringing together Fort Bend County junior and senior high school students and providing them the unique opportunity to experience how volunteerism and philanthropy coexist to serve their community. Over the next school year (2013-2014), the team of selected students will embark on a journey to strengthen their connections with their community, as well as with each other. The YIP Team will participate in site visits and volunteer projects with area nonprofit organizations to increase their knowledge of the Fort Bend County nonprofit sector. At the conclusion of the school year, with their new knowledge and understanding of the community and the many organizations providing services to its residents, the YIP Team will evaluate local charities and put philanthropy into action by awarding monetary grants to participating nonprofits. The application deadline is September 19, 2013.
Congratulations 2014 National Merit Semifinalists: Rahul Gupta, Silin Huang and Thomas Settlemyre9/12/2013
FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD is proud to announce that 69 high school seniors are semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program, which is a 38% increase over last year’s number of semifinalists. To put that number in perspective, Fort Bend ISD has one of the highest percentages of National Merit Semifinalists among the larger school districts in Texas.
The 69 semifinalists were selected from more than 1.5 million high school students in more than 22,000 United States high schools who entered the 2014 Merit Program by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. Fort Bend ISD Officer Jenny Robles faced a sudden illness with kidney failure a few months back. She faced the battle head on and doctors immediately realized she would need a transplant. Her sister was found to be a match and volunteered to be a donor. On August 20th, Jenny received her new kidney. The operation went well, and Jenny is on the road to a full recovery, but months of doctor bills and dialysis have piled up and future medical bills are inevitable.
Jenny is a mother of three and a Naval reservist. She has worked with FBISD Police for over seven years, most recently serving the students and staff of Elkins High School. Now we have an opportunity to help Jenny and her family.
