By COREY ROEPKEN Kempner High School boys soccer coach William Miller said before the season he thought his team would be in the thick of the playoff race. Four weeks into the district schedule his players have proved him right. Thanks to three wins last week the Cougars are in sole possession of first place and four points clear of nine-time reigning district champ Clements. The first half of district play ends on Tuesday, and Kempner faces the tall task of playing Elkins. After a few good results during the first third of district play the Broncos broke through with a 2–1 victory over previously unbeaten and untied Elkins. Broncos (4–2) got goals from Victor Ojeda and Manny Roth just a few mintues apart midway through the first half to take a 2–0 lead. Mario Garcia and Jordan Pena each had one assist. About 15 minutes into the second half Elkins' Charlie Gagnon scored with an assist from Fernando Arias‐Williams. The Knights (5–1) lost their hold on first place. By COREY ROEPKEN The Elkins High School boys soccer team last week continued to prove it has what it takes to win its first district title since 2001. The Knights defeated Hightower, 2-1, on Tuesday to give them wins over last year's top two district finishers. The Kempner boys had perhaps the strongest of weeks. The Cougars remained undefeated with a 6-1 win over previously undefeated Bush, and a 1-0 victory over nine-time reigning district champion Clements. The Austin girls defeated Clements, 1-0, on Tuesday en route to two more wins. They are the district's only undefeated girls team. Staff Reports | 0 comments Posted on January 28, 2011 The Kempner High School boys soccer team continued its undefeated beginning to district play with a 1-0 victory over Clements Friday night. The goal did not come until there were 1 minute, 34 seconds left in regulation. Kempner's Javier Pena stole the ball at midfield and dribbled into the penalty area.
