Forty-five Elkins Students to Hear Olympian Ruben Gonzalez Speak at FBISD H.S. Diversity Conference2/17/2011 Olympian Ruben Gonzalez to Speak at Fort Bend ISD’s High School Diversity Conference, February 25
FORT BEND ISD ― Ruben Gonzalez, three-time U.S. Olympian and national luge champion, will serve as the keynote speaker at Fort Bend ISD’s 2011 High School Diversity Conference, which will be held Friday, February 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Sugar Land Baptist Church. A peak-performance expert and master storyteller, Gonzalez uses his Olympic experiences to inspire audiences to think differently, to live life with passion and to have the courage to take the necessary steps toward their goals by pushing beyond their self-imposed limitations to produce better results! He has appeared nationally on ABC, CBS, and NBC, and has been featured in Time Magazine as well as many publications worldwide. He attributes much of his success to his beliefs that "life is an adventure" and that "you must dare to chase your dreams". As a child, Gonzalez dreamt of competing in the Olympic Games, even though he was considered an average athlete. In 1984, he began training for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. His sport of choice was the luge, a race that required competitors to hurl down an icy track at speeds of 80 miles per hour. Gonzalez had to overcome many challenges in the sport, having prepared at the late age of 21. His dream became a reality; however, when he qualified to compete in the Calgary Olympics. He went on to compete in the Albertville Olympics and the Salt Lake City Olympics at the age of 39. It was at the Salt Lake City Olympic Games that he served as an Olympic Torchbearer, chosen for his ability to embody the Olympic spirit and inspire others to reach new heights. Gonzalez brings the same energy and dedication that he devoted to his athletic career to audiences of all sizes and backgrounds in a truly unique and memorable performance that teaches as it entertains, and inspires as it motivates. He will deliver both the opening and closing remarks at Fort Bend ISD’s 2011 High School Diversity Conference. |
