The Youth in Philanthropy Program (YIP) has been in existence since 1997 and has been a community partnership with the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, Fort Bend County school districts, local businesses and the community-at-large. The mission of YIP is to provide opportunities for junior and senior high school students to learn the role volunteering and philanthropy play in building a better community for all.
YIP cultivates student leadership by using an application process to recruit 150 juniors and seniors, representing schools throughout Fort Bend County (19 campuses), to develop and test different skill sets while making a difference in their community. YIP teams implement over 25 volunteer projects planned with the assistance of the local nonprofit sector, allowing students to discover the important role the nonprofit sector plays in their community. The partnership between YIP teams and the nonprofit sector also allows students to enter into the philanthropic mode by measuring their new knowledge and experience in volunteering to determine grant awards to be presented to participating nonprofits at the completion of program.
The YIP program concludes with a celebration called the Investment in Youth luncheon. The luncheon provides a venue for YIP students to highlight their volunteer experiences to their peers, business representatives and the community-at-large. With the support of foundations and the community, scholarships are awarded to YIP students in recognition of their volunteer spirit.
The success of the program has been maintained by following the YIP objectives established in 1997 and they are:
