The softball teams from Elkins and Clements high schools are used to playing in the postseason. This year they took a different route on their way there.
Both teams won tiebreaker games on Friday at Kempner High School to clinch berths in the Region III-5A playoffs. Elkins began the day with a 13-6 victory over Austin to earn the district's No. 3 seed. Clements followed suit with a 6-0 victory over Austin to earn the No. 4 seed.
Elkins (22-14, 12-5) had won or shared each of the last 10 district championships heading into this season. Clements (20-10, 12-5) shared a few of those and never had been lower than the No. 2 seed. They never had lost to any team but one another during district play.
Kempner and Travis broke through this season and won their first district titles by finishing one game ahead of the third-place tie between Elkins, Clements and Austin (21-15, 12-5) . Here is a closer look at each of Friday's games.... READ MORE
