The Bush High School boys basketball team may not have the lofty ranking it did last season, but the Broncos still consider themselves contenders for titles this season.
The reigning Class 5A state champions advanced to the semifinals of the 14th annual Outback Tournament on Friday with a 59-39 victory over district rival Marshall at Wheeler Field House. Bush has won the last two Outback titles and has played in the last three championship games.
If the No. 15-ranked Broncos want to repeat either feat they'll have to beat No. 6-ranked San Antonio Churchill at noon at Wheeler. The other semifinal pits FBISD teams Hightower and Travis at 1:30 p.m. The winners will meet for the championship at 8 p.m.
Bush lost three starters from last season's team so it still is finding its way this time around. Coach Ronnie Courtney said the Broncos will be ready for a tough Churchill team that advanced with a 69-53 victory over Elkins.
"This is a very tough tournament to win," Courtney said. "There are so many great teams. It's good for the young kids I have out there for us to be where we are."
Bush led by seven points at the end of the third quarter then scored eight of the first 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull away. Junior center Cameron Ridley led the way with 17 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Rodshard Davis and Adrian Tepker scored 10 points apiece.
Tola Olushola led Marshall with eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Branford Jones and Kenny Bangmora scored 12 points apiece for Elkins. Jones added 13 rebounds and four steals. Elkins will play Marshall in the consolation semifinals at 9 a.m. at Wheeler....READ MORE
