The Hightower High School girls basketball team began the season as the No. 1-ranked team in Texas. Thanks to a victory in the first round of the Katy ISD tournament on Thursday, the Lady Canes will get a chance to prove their superiority on Friday.
Hightower will play Katy Seven Lakes in the second round at noon Friday at Seven Lakes High School. Seven Lakes defeated Hightower in the third-place game at Fort Bend ISD's Chick-fil-A Classic on Nov. 20. If the Lady Canes beat Seven Lakes they potentially will play the new No. 1 team - Cypress Falls - at 6 p.m. also at Seven Lakes.

Raven Lane had 15 points and seven steals, and Alana Heard had 14 points and eight steals. Since losing twice on Nov. 20 the Lady Canes have slipped to No. 6 in the state coaches poll. They already avenged one of their losses with a victory over Katy Taylor on Nov. 22.
KATY ISD TOURNAMENT
Cypress Falls 51, Dulles 28
Michelle Umachi scored 10 points for Dulles against the state's No. 1-ranked team. Dulles (4-8) will play Katy in the consolation draw at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
Galena Park North Shore 69, Bush 33
Bush (3-5) drops into the consolation draw, where it will open with San Antonio Antonian Prep at 9 a.m. Friday.
Cypress Fairbanks 64, Travis 31
Toni Garrison scored 10 points, and Deizarae McCoy got 12 rebounds for Travis (1-8) against the defending Class 5A state champions. The Lady Tigers play Katy Morton Ranch in the consolation draw at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
ALDINE ISD TOURNAMENT
Marshall 48, Aldine 33
Evan Singleton scored 18 points and got 11 rebounds, and Dominique Liddell had nine points and 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Buffs (4-5). Their second-round game is at 7 p.m. Friday at Aldine MacArthur High School.
Kingwood Park 43, Elkins 26
Elkins led by four points at the end of the first quarter and trailed by five points at the end of the third. The Lady Knights (2-8) did not score in the fourth quarter.
