By JASON McDANIEL For the Chronicle Jan. 21, 2011, 8:21PM A disciplinary issue kept Elkins star Donielle Breaux from joining her teammates until Jan. 4, seriously hampering the Lady Knights’ efforts to win during the first half of the season. But given the reckless abandon with which she attacked the basket Friday at Wheeler Fieldhouse – and subsequently hit the deck hard on several occasions – that’s probably a good thing. The senior Kansas signee supplied 24 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and her signature toughness, leading the Lady Knights to a 71-54 win over Fort Bend Austin in District 23-5A play....READ MORE Fort Bend Sun

Check out this week’s Sun power rankings. 1. Hightower (25-4, 5-1): After skyrocketing into the stratosphere with a championship in Duncanville the Lady Canes have come back to Earth during the last two weeks of district play. The loss to Elkins was surprising but not as much as many will make it. The Lady Canes followed that with a lackluster performance in a loss to Clements. They’re still the best, but right now they’re not playing like it. 2. Elkins (10-15, 5-1): Followers of these rankings will remember the warning from way back when: if the Lady Knights ever get Donielle Breaux back they will sprint up the standings. That’s exactly what has happened. The two-point win over Hightower is a gigantic step for this energized group but not enough to take over the No. 1 spot. That doesn’t mean Elkins is not capable of getting there....READ MORE |
