by JASON McDANIEL, CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT published February 10, 2011 9:10 am The Elkins Lady Knights are gearing up for what they hope is a deep basketball playoff run behind star Kansas signee Donielle Breaux. They open the Class 5A playoffs next week. Their optimism is based on a strong finish to a regular season that started off much differently. Breaux missed the first 21 games, putting Elkins and longtime coach Willie Yarber in a difficult situation....READ MORE Fort Bend Sun

By COREY ROEPKEN During non‐district play this season the Elkins High School girls basketball team felt what it's like to sink lower than it ever has. That's why after Monday night's victory the Lady Knights feel like they've never been this high. Elkins weathered a third‐quarter storm then sprinted into the lead for good early in the fourth quarter of a 66–56 triumph over Kempner at Wheeler Field House in the regular season finale. The victory gives Elkins a share of the District 23–5A title with Hightower. The Lady Canes defeated Willowridge, 82–20, at Hopson Monday night. While reigning state‐runner up Hightower was the easy pick to win a district championship, Elkins needed to fight through non‐district play without the help of Kansas signee Donielle Breaux. Elkins (17–15, 12–1) has won all 11 games in which Breaux has played. Breaux played like she always does Monday and led the Lady Knights to their second district title in school history (2006).....READ MORE Fort Bend Sun

Posted: Thursday, February 3, 2011 9:30 am | Updated: 10:52 pm, Wed Feb 2, 2011. By COREY ROEPKEN | This time last year the Austin High School girls basketball team had its work cut out for it. Facing the tall task of qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in school history, the Lady Bulldogs faultered in some key games down the stretch and finished fifth in District 23-5A. That left a bitter taste in the mouths of the returning players. They had achieved the school’s first state ranking and had won 24 games, but when it came time for the postseason they had to watch from the stands. This time around things are different. The Lady Bulldogs (8-3) haven’t clinched anything, but the likelihood of them doing so is extremely high. They’ve won all the important games and thanks to last season’s disappointment, finally feel as if they deserve it what the expect to come next. “Last year we thought we were so good that nothing could really stop us,” junior post player Pearl Ubaru said. “This year we’re humble. We take one team at a time. We don’t look ahead and say ‘We’ll beat them, and then we’re going to beat them.’” With two games remaining in the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs’ path to the playoffs is simple. Win once and they’re in. It helps that the Lady Bulldogs’ two remaining games are against Bush and Travis – teams that have combined for four district wins. Hightower (10-1) and Elkins (10-1) already have clinched playoff berths. That leaves Dulles, Kempner (6-5) and Clements (6-5) fighting like crazy for a chance at the postseason....READ MORE Fort Bend Sun
