by Corey Roepken ALVIN – Wykeem Randle took the meaning of clutch to another level Tuesday night.
The Willowridge High School senior made all 18 of his free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to lead the Eagles to a 76-68 victory over Friendswood in the second of two pool play games at the Alvin Lions Holiday Classic.
Willowridge defeated South Houston earlier Tuesday and will play in the opening round of the gold bracket at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Alvin High School.
Randle’s performance from the free-throw line was just part of the fourth-quarter story for the Eagles. They did not make a field goal in the final eight minutes. They made 22-of-25 free throws. Randle finished with 32 points.
Willowridge led by nine points in the fourth before Friendswood rallied to take a one-point lead with three minutes remaining. Mike Hunter added 15 points and nine assists while playing the entire game. Derrace Cosey made three 3-pointers on his way to 11 points.
The Eagles have regained a bit of the spark with which they began the season. Before their current three-game losing streak they had lost six of eight.
Coach Roylin Wolf said the funk was for good reason. The Eagles were spending more time in tutorials to make sure they were eligible for the start of district play the first week of January. They have made it to the other side on good terms and are ready to get back on track.
Marshall split two pool play games Tuesday. The Buffs beat Spring Woods, 54-51, in their opener. They lost to Pasadena Dobie, 52-40, in the nightcap. Tola Olushola scored 13 points against Spring Woods and 11 points against Dobie.
The Buffs will play Katy Mayde Creek in the silver bracket on Wednesday.
