KATY - The Hightower High School girls basketball team went from a big high to an extreme low in less than 16 hours from Friday night to Saturday morning.
Luckily for the Lady Canes they salvaged a little something from the Katy ISD Classic.
No. 6-ranked Hightower began Saturday's tournament play with an 80-35 loss to No. 2 Atascocita at the Merrell Center. The Lady Canes fell behind eight points in the first minute and a half and never recovered. They trailed 29 points at halftime.
Not long after that, though, the Lady Canes went back to the Merrell Center and defeated No. 17-ranked Cypress Fairbanks, 43-31, to finish third. It's the second time this season Hightower has defeated Fairbanks - the team that beat the Lady Canes in last season's state championship game.
Hightower was coming off a a pair of dominant victories on Friday.
Against Atascocita Saturday, Hightower looked overmatched from the beginning. The Lady Eagles scored in the first five seconds and led 15-1 before Hightower made a field goal. Jasmine Prophet led Hightower with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Alana Heard had six points, four steals and four rebounds.
The Lady Canes don't have much time to regroup. Their next game is against No. 8-ranked Galena Park North Shore, which beat Atascocita in Saturday night's tournament championship game.
LADY RANGER CLASSIC (at Terry High School)
Austin 63, Pearland 30
The Lady Bulldogs coasted to victory in the third-place game. Nicole Blaskowsky led Austin (12-6) with 22 points. Blaskowsky and Pearl Ubaru were named to the All-Tournament team.
Kempner 44, Klein 36
Kempner won the consolation title thanks to some strong defense. Alex Lapeyrolerie led the Lady Cougars (8-4) with 20 points and nine rebounds. Anita Kaduru had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Christinique Grice had 11 blocks and seven rebounds; and Kiana Ingram had five steals. Kaduru was named to the All-Tournament team.
ALDINE ISD INVITATIONAL
Marshall 50, Aldine Eisenhower 41
Mylana Hearn had 18 points and five steals, and Evan Singleton had 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead Marshall (5-6) to a tie for fifth place.
Bryan Rudder 69, Elkins 46
K'vonna Johnson scored 12 points for Elkins (3-9) in the consolation semifinal....READ MORE
