Last year was a rebuilding year for Elkins, which graduated 13 players before the season. But the group that took the field was a good one, filled with guys who stepped up and played well together.
And that helped the Knights squeak back into the playoffs.
"Going into it I did (see it as a rebuilding year)," Elkins coach Kurt Lawson said. "I looked at it as a year that I wasn't quite sure how good we'd be, and we ended up making playoffs again and playing real well with a bunch of juniors.
"So last year we definitely exceeded my expectations."
Now the expectations are much higher. The Knights beat the teams they were supposed to beat last season, but Lawson expects them to contend with District 23-5A's top teams this time around.
"Our goal should be to win the district championship," Lawson said. "I know Clements has won it (nine) years in a row, and there are other teams and every team expects to win it, but that's our goal – to go out and win it.
"We have the talent to do it. Whether or not we can come together and play well enough together remains to be seen."....READ MORE
