FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD is proud to announce that 74 high school seniors are semifinalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are among nearly 16,000 semifinalists named in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million that will be offered next spring.
The 74 semifinalists were selected from more than 1.4 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools who entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To advance to the finalist level in the competition, the semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm their PSAT/NMSQT performance. The Fort Bend ISD Police Department, Safe and Drug Free Schools Department, and the Fort Bend Community Prevention Coalition, will sponsor the Drug Enforcement Administration’s “National Drug Take Back Initiative” on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the parking lot at FBISD Mercer Stadium, 16403 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land. This event is an opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinet of old, expired or unwanted medicine. One purpose is to ensure that our youth don’t have access to prescription medications, which can lead to abuse and addiction. Another purpose is to have an environmentally safe way to dispose of medications rather than our water system. See you Saturday!
