The deadlines for submitting an application to your child’s counselor are as follows:
• Deadline for April and May testing – March 6, 2013
• Deadline for July testing – May 24, 2013
The exams offered are comprehensive for each course and require that students perform at the appropriate level of standards established by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English. Test contents and format are also determined by the district curriculum, which is based on the TEKS for LOTE. Applications will be linked to the World Language page and may also be obtained through the counselor’s office. Review guides for all exams are available on the link provided below or may be obtained by contacting any High School World Language Department Chair, Middle and High School counselors, or World Language Teachers.
Credit by Exam WITH PRIOR INSTRUCTION
In order to qualify to take Credit by Exam With Prior Instruction (WPI), your son or daughter must meet one of the following criteria and must be able to provide documentation of some kind of prior formal instruction:
• Enrollment in a bilingual or ESL program through an accredited school district. *
• Enrollment in classes in another country where the language is spoken. *
• Student previously failed the course with a minimum average of 60.*
• Enrollment in an extra-curricular setting (such as week-end classes, or after school FLEX program) **
• Enrollment in a Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) program. **
* Students with this documentation are required to test WPI.
** Requires documentation in the form of course syllabi, course materials, and/or documentation from the organization that provided the instruction.
Please note that Credit by ExamWITH Prior Instruction may only be taken once, that students must score a minimum of 70 for a passing score and that the result of this exam will be counted as course credit(s) and grade point credit (GPA) on the student’s Academic Achievement Record. The score the student receives will count for first and second semester credit for each level. Once a student takes the CBE WPI, the numerical grade, whether pass or fail, will be recorded on his/her official school transcript.
Credit by Exam NO PRIOR INSTRUCTION
Students who cannot provide documentation of formal prior instruction, as outlined above, are allowed to take the Credit by Exam No Prior Instruction (NPI). Credit by Exam NO Prior Instruction may only be taken once, and students must score a minimum of 90 in order for the score to count. If the student scores 90 or above, the score will be counted as course credit(s) and grade point credit (GPA) on the student’s Academic Achievement Record. The score the student receives will count for first and second semester credit for each level. If the student scores less than a 90, no score is recorded, although the attempt is documented.
Please note: The designation (WPI or NPI) that you select on your application may not be changed once the student begins the exam.
